Mention tracking is the monitoring of where and how a vendor is referenced across analyst research, notes, blogs and public commentary.
It captures not only frequency but framing — the category a vendor is placed in, the competitors named alongside it, and the qualifiers attached.
Mention tracking vs. media monitoring
The corpus, the access model and the citation conventions differ. Much analyst research sits behind subscription walls, so coverage of the corpus is necessarily partial.
Why it matters
How you are described in a passing mention often travels further than how you are scored in an evaluation.
The mention is the portable unit. It gets quoted in a deck, repeated in an inquiry, lifted into a comparison page and — increasingly — retrieved and synthesised by a system answering a buyer's question. A single clause in a paragraph you never saw can define your category for a market.
