A citation surface is any body of text a retrieval system may draw on when answering a question about a vendor, including analyst research, documentation, review platforms and third-party writing.
It includes material the vendor publishes, material others publish about it, and material in which it appears incidentally.
Citation surface vs. your website
Most of a vendor's citation surface is not owned by the vendor.
Analyst research, review platforms, partner documentation, comparison pages, community discussion and press coverage all sit inside it. The website is one component, and generally not the most authoritative one.
Why it matters
Analyst research is an unusually high-authority citation surface: structured, third-party, dense with comparative language, and written in exactly the terms a system reaches for when asked which vendors serve a market.
That is the sharpest available argument for why analyst relations is not a legacy function. The research it produces is a primary input to the mechanism now assembling shortlists.
