Hallucinated attribution is an AI system's assignment of a claim, capability or evaluation result to a company that did not make it or did not receive it.
Common forms include awarding a vendor an evaluation placement it does not hold, assigning a competitor's capability to it, or attributing a positioning statement it has never used.
Why this is a distinct category of error
A general factual error is an inaccuracy. This subtype is about who — which makes it a competitive and reputational event rather than a mistake about the world.
Why it matters
It is the machine equivalent of an analyst misdescribing you, with three differences: it happens at volume, it leaves no relationship to repair, and there is nobody to call.
Analyst relations exists as a discipline because being described inaccurately by an influential third party is commercially serious. That premise has not changed. The third party has.
