Everest Group PEAK Matrix

The PEAK Matrix is Everest Group's comparative assessment framework, scoring providers on market impact and vision and capability, and grouping them into Leaders, Major Contenders and Aspirants.

Market impact is measured through revenue, client numbers and year-on-year growth. Delivery capability is measured through scale of operations, scope, technology and innovation, delivery footprint and buyer satisfaction. The assessment process includes customer reference interviews — a step some other firms omit.

Everest's center of gravity is services, business process and global sourcing markets rather than enterprise software.

Star Performer is not a leadership tier

This is the most common misreading of the framework, and Everest is explicit about it.

Star Performer recognises the strongest year-on-year improvement between consecutive assessments, selected by comparing providers' movement on the market impact and vision and capability dimensions against the previous edition. Everest states directly that the Star Performer title does not reflect an overall market leadership position — that position is the Leader, Major Contender or Aspirant designation.

A vendor can be a Star Performer and an Aspirant simultaneously. Marketing that presents Star Performer alongside Leader as though the two were peer recognitions is misrepresenting the framework.

Why it matters

The Star Performer confusion is not an obscure technicality. It is repeated constantly in vendor press releases, and it is checkable in one visit to Everest's own methodology page.

Which makes it a useful diagnostic in both directions: it tells you something about how carefully a competitor reads the frameworks they market against, and it tells a buyer the same thing about you.
