ISG Provider Lens is a quadrant-based evaluation series placing providers into one of four segments — Leader, Product Challenger, Market Challenger and Contender — usually within a defined country or region.
ISG's own definitions: Leaders offer the most appropriate solutions for client needs; Product Challengers have an attractive portfolio but limited competitive strength; Market Challengers have competitive strength but need to improve portfolio attractiveness; Contenders need to improve both.
Product Challenger vs. Market Challenger
These are opposite diagnoses and are constantly conflated into a single notion of "challenger."
A Product Challenger has the portfolio and lacks the market position. A Market Challenger has the market position and lacks the portfolio. One is a go-to-market problem; the other is a product problem. Treating them as the same reading discards the entire content of the placement.
Rising Star and "Not In"
Rising Star is a separate designation marking providers ISG expects to reach the Leader quadrant within roughly 12 to 24 months, based on portfolio, roadmap, focus on market trends and understanding of the local market. It can be held alongside a segment placement.
"Not In" indicates a provider was not placed in a quadrant, either because it does not offer the relevant services or because insufficient data was available. It is not a scoring outcome.
Why regional segmentation matters
Provider Lens studies are frequently published per country or region, so a single vendor can hold different designations across separate national studies within the same wave — Leader in one market, Product Challenger in another.
Why it matters
The regional structure makes this one of the more accessible evaluation programs for a vendor that is strong in a single geography and not yet at global scale.
For European companies that is a direct opportunity, and an unusual one: most evaluation programs reward the scale you don't have yet. This one has a category for the position you're actually in.
