IDC MarketScape

An IDC MarketScape is a vendor assessment that positions providers on a graphic against two scored dimensions — Capabilities and Strategies — placing each into one of four bands: Leaders, Major Players, Contenders and Participants.

The two dimensions measure different time horizons. Capabilities covers supplier product, go-to-market and business execution in the short term. Strategies measures how well a supplier's direction aligns with what customers will require in three to five years. Scoring combines qualitative and quantitative criteria.

IDC's own band definitions: Leaders are strong across both strategy and capabilities; Major Players show strength in most areas; Contenders have strengths but are often limited in areas such as geography or specific features; Participants are frequently new entrants or fading incumbents.

Two details most summaries omit

Bubble size is market share. It is not a confidence interval, a score, or a measure of how well the vendor performed.

The band boundaries move. The dividing lines between Leaders, Major Players, Contenders and Participants shift according to the weighting applied between the two axes in that particular study. A vendor's band can therefore change between editions without its own scores having moved much.

IDC MarketScape vs. Magic Quadrant and Wave

All three are comparative evaluations with graphical output, and all three use "Leaders" as a top band.

The vocabulary below the top band does not translate. "Major Player" has no direct equivalent in either the Magic Quadrant or the Wave, and mapping it to "Challenger" or "Strong Performer" is a guess rather than a conversion.

IDC also segments heavily by geography and vertical, so a vendor may appear in a MarketScape for one region and not another.

Why it matters

The moving band boundaries are the detail worth internalising, because they break the intuition that placement reflects performance alone.

A vendor can improve and move down. The weighting changed, the market shifted, and the line moved underneath them. Explaining that to a board after the fact is considerably harder than knowing it in advance.
