Analyst tiering is a vendor's internal ranking of analysts by their expected influence on that vendor's business, used to allocate limited AR attention.
Tiering is generally based on coverage fit, publication activity, evaluation authorship and observed influence on the vendor's own deals, and is revised as coverage changes.
Analyst tiering vs. firm seniority
A firm's internal grades — Analyst, Senior Analyst, Principal, VP, Distinguished — describe standing within the firm.
Tiering is the vendor's own assessment of individuals, and it does not have to agree. It is also distinct from firm tiering, which ranks organisations rather than people.
Why it matters
Tiering is where AR strategy actually lives. Everything downstream — calendar, budget, executive time — is allocated against it.
It is also the judgment most often outsourced or inherited. A junior analyst with deep coverage of your buyer's exact problem may outrank a famous one, and no external list will tell you that. It has to be worked out from your own market.
