An RFI response is a vendor's reply to a buyer's formal request for information during a procurement process, distinct from any analyst-firm submission.
It is a sales artifact, written for a named prospective customer, governed by that buyer's evaluation process and timeline.
RFI response vs. vendor questionnaire
See vendor questionnaire. One is read by a buyer making a single decision; the other is read by an analyst producing research that many buyers will use.
Why it matters
The two are frequently written by the same team from the same source library, which is how positioning inconsistencies reach both audiences simultaneously.
It also means the RFI library is a usable diagnostic. If the claims a company makes to buyers under procurement pressure differ from the claims it makes to analysts, the difference is generally the part it cannot substantiate.
