Analyst sentiment

Analyst sentiment is the assessed disposition of a given analyst toward a vendor, ranging from advocate to detractor, tracked over time.

It is inferred from published commentary, briefing responses, questions asked, and direct statements in inquiry or perception research.

Sentiment vs. coverage

Coverage is what an analyst is responsible for. Sentiment is what they think. An analyst can cover you closely and think very little of you.

Why it matters

Sentiment moves slowly and asymmetrically: it degrades faster than it improves.

A single badly handled evaluation or a contradicted claim can undo several years of accumulated goodwill, and the recovery runs at the pace of the analyst's own publication cycle rather than the vendor's.
