Analyst influence

Analyst influence is the extent to which analyst research and advice shape which vendors a buyer considers, shortlists and selects.

It operates through several channels: published research a buyer reads, inquiry conversations a buyer books, evaluations a buyer uses to build a shortlist, and advice given inside a selection process.

Analyst influence vs. analyst sentiment

Sentiment is what an analyst thinks. Influence is the effect of what they think on somebody else's decision.

The two are measured differently and can diverge entirely. An enthusiastic analyst with no buyer readership produces sentiment and no influence.

Why it matters

Positive sentiment with no influence is a pleasant relationship with no commercial consequence — and it is the most comfortable failure state in the discipline, because it feels exactly like success.

Programs drift toward it naturally. Sentiment is easy to observe and pleasant to report; influence is hard to observe and frequently disappointing.
