Gartner Critical Capabilities is companion research to a Magic Quadrant that scores providers' products against specific use cases rather than positioning them on a graphic.
It assesses defined product capabilities and applies use-case weightings, producing a score per use case rather than a single overall position.
Critical Capabilities vs. Magic Quadrant
The Magic Quadrant answers "where does this vendor sit in the market." Critical Capabilities answers "best for what."
They are published as a pair and read as one, which is why the second is so often overlooked.
Why it matters
A vendor outside the Leaders quadrant can score highest for the use case a given buyer actually has.
That is the most commercially useful fact in the Gartner catalogue and the least propagated one, because the quadrant graphic travels and the use-case scores do not. It is also a structural disadvantage for specialists, whose strongest evidence sits in the document nobody screenshots.
