Analyst-turned-vendor

An analyst-turned-vendor is a former industry analyst now working inside a technology company, typically in AR, product marketing or strategy.

Movement in both directions is common and long-standing: analysts join vendors, and vendor-side practitioners join firms.

Analyst-turned-vendor vs. AR consultant

An AR consultant advises from outside, usually across several clients. An analyst-turned-vendor sits inside one company and carries its incentives.

Why it matters

They carry two things that are difficult to acquire otherwise: the firm's internal norms, and live relationships with former colleagues.

The flow of people between the two sides is one of the reasons the discipline operates on tacit rules rather than published ones. Much of what is understood about how firms actually work travels with individuals rather than appearing in any methodology document — which is precisely why a glossary of this kind is unusual.
