A Forrester Landscape is a market overview report that defines a market's maturity, use cases and dynamics, and lists notable vendors — often serving as the precursor from which Wave participants are selected.
Landscapes accommodate markets at three levels of maturity — emerging, established and mature — with report components varying by level. They define top use cases for technology markets or business scenarios for services markets, and draw in part on questionnaire data submitted by vendors.
Landscape vs. Wave
A Landscape describes a market and lists the vendors in it. A Wave scores and bands a selected subset of them.
Wave participants are frequently drawn from the preceding Landscape, which makes the Landscape the visible entry point into Forrester's coverage of a market.
Why it matters
For a vendor not yet in a Wave, the Landscape is usually where coverage begins — and because it accommodates emerging markets, it is often available in categories where no comparative evaluation exists yet.
That makes it structurally important for companies defining a new category rather than competing in an established one, which is a position more European vendors occupy than realise.
