An answer engine is a system that responds to a query with a synthesized answer rather than a list of links, drawing on retrieved sources it may or may not cite.
The output is composed at query time from retrieved material, which means two users asking the same question may receive differently worded answers built from different sources.
Answer engine vs. search engine
A search engine returns options and delegates the judgment to the reader. An answer engine returns a conclusion and has already made the judgment.
Why it matters
When the output is a conclusion rather than a list, being ranked fourth is indistinguishable from being absent. There is no second page to be on.
